  What It Is

Most of the world's most talented musicians are not named Justin or Brittany, and they don't live in Burbank or Brooklyn. There are hundred of thousands wonderful talents out in the world, playing incredible music - without recording contracts or accounts on iTunes. But, they do have audiences; in Arusha and Ankara.

At The Muskoka Foundation, we are very proud to have started the "Net Impact Music" program. Through our network of Overland Travelers we are recording (only with permission) some of the best music from around the world, and then making it available as MP3 downloads through our partnership with Amazon.com

100% of the profits generated from the track sales on Net Impact Music go back to the artists in the local communities.

  What It Takes

This is one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling programs offered by The Muskoka Foundation, and one of the easiest.

Before departing on your trip, we will provide you with a portable recording studio, which fits inside a small Pelican briefcase. Using the provided microphones, mixer & Zoom 4 digital recorder (shown on right) you will be able to set up in almost any performance situation.

We encourage you to also take photos of the performers, and gather information about them through a short 'get-to-know-you' interview, which you can then post alongside the music tracks, so that their new worldwide audience can learn about them. Through this process you will build a closer relationship with fascinating artists from around the planet, in a way that normally would not be possible if you just showed up as a passive traveler.

Once you have the studio on board, you're welcome to use it for other purposes as well. It can do great double duty for podcasting, field recordings of the environment, and even interviews with fellow travelers / interesting people for The Overland Podcast.

  What It Takes

The Net Impact Music program provides a lot of benefits from different angles:

  1. Provides local musicians with access to global markets through the Internet, creating the possibility for them to earn income from their music. For many musicians, this may mean being able to make a living exclusively from their art, providing the freedom for them to focus on their music and give up sustencance 'day jobs'.

  2. Builds connections between the musicians and a global audience, providing them with critical exposure and access, which could be critical to them achieving commercial recording deals in the future.
  3. Creates a positive 'ice-breaker' for the travelers to move beyond 'passive audience', becoming instead a valued partner building meaningful relationships and friendships that can last for years.
